Biography

Industry leadership across healthcare, trade and national partnership.

Dr Stavros Nicolaou has almost 38 years' experience in the pharmaceutical industry, with a career spanning domestic and international general management. He is presently Group Senior Executive for Strategic Trade at Aspen Pharmacare Holdings and serves as a member of the Holdings Group Executive, which has oversight of Aspen's operations in more than 60 countries.

His public and industry service includes roles on a number of boards and advisory councils. He serves on the President's National Orders Advisory Council, chairs the Saudi-SA Business Council, is a member of the SA-France Business Council, serves on the Board of Business Unity South Africa and the BRICS Business Council, and is Co-Chair of the B20 Industrial Transformation and Innovation Task Force.

Dr Nicolaou has also served South African public institutions and civil platforms, including previous service as Chairman of the Interim Board and on the Board of Cricket South Africa, on the boards of Brand SA and Proudly SA, and on the 2027 Cricket World Cup Board. He has been a regular speaker at platforms including the Economist Roundtable, the World Economic Forum, the World Trade Organization and the International Finance Corporation.

His recognitions include an honorary doctorate in Medicine from Wits University, Greece's ARGO Public Service Award, the International Federation of Pharmacists IPS Medal for outstanding contributions in industrial pharmacy, and the National Order of Merit of the third degree of the Republic of Ukraine for strengthening interstate cooperation between South Africa and Ukraine.

He is particularly passionate about diversity, transformation, championing localisation, and building bridges between the private and public sectors to improve access to treatment and healthcare outcomes in emerging markets.
